Midiendo el Mundo

Abstrakt: Midiendo el Mundo  – das Buch ist als Teil der gleichnamigen Installation in der Galerie OCSN in Mexiko-Stadt entstanden  – untersucht das alte Thema der Vermessung der Welt: messen, klassifizieren, berechnen und kategorisieren  – damit versuchte der Mensch sich die Welt anzueignen. Doch jede Messung ist immer zugleich eine Reduktion und ein Ausschliessen: Was zählbar wird, sid nur die Zahlen. Das Buch beschreibt, wie dieses Vermessen uns nicht nur von der Welt, sondern auch von uns selbst entfernt hat  – denn zwischen den Kategorien geht das verloren, was wir waren, bevor wir uns begriffen.

Abstract: Midiendo el Mundo  – the book emerged as part of the eponymous installation at the OCSN Gallery in Mexico City  – examines the ancient theme of measuring the world: to measure, classify, calculate and categorise  – the means by which humankind sought to appropriate the world. Yet every measurement is at once a reduction and an exclusion: what becomes countable is only ever the numbers. The book describes how this measuring has distanced us not only from the world but also from ourselves  – for between the categories, what is lost is what we were before we conceived of ourselves.

Resumen: Midiendo el Mundo  – el libro surgió como parte de la instalación homónima en la galería OCSN de la Ciudad de México  – examina el antiguo tema de la medición del mundo: medir, clasificar, calcular y categorizar; con ello, el ser humano intentó apropiarse del mundo. Sin embargo, toda medición es a la vez una reducción y una exclusión: lo que se vuelve contable son únicamente los números. El libro describe cómo esa medición nos ha alejado no solo del mundo, sino también de nosotros mismos, pues entre las categorías se pierde lo que éramos antes de concebirnos.
