If Not Now

Jill Daniels

Synopsis:

If Not Now is a short film located in a long city street. In the past the street has seen plenty of diversity, but also racist attacks. Now, through semi-gentrification the street is changing as tourists have poured in. The film highlights this contestation through the sound of the city, which is replaced with the looped sound of an urban park, birds, children’s voices, a dog barking; the only traffic sounds now are police sirens. Gradually it becomes evident that this is not synchronised sound but is a designed soundscape which gives the sensation of a more pleasant inner world where traffic sound and voices have faded and silence and nature remains. But punctuating the film are unidentified voices from past and present discussing a violent past, a dog repeatedly barking, the roar of a fire over archive mages of police car on fire that disrupts the tranquil sounds of birds and nature.
